Degree Requirements

Required Courses for all MA Students in Applied Anthropology:

  • AN 6123 – Anthropological Theory (3 credit hours)
  • AN 8011 – Professionalization in Applied Anthropology (1 credit hour)
  • AN 8013 – Quantitative Methods in Anthropology (3 credit hours)
  • AN 8215 – Internship in Applied Anthropology (5 credit hours)
  • AN 9000 – Thesis (6 hours)
  • One out-of-department course: Students will choose two courses from one area or, with permission from their advisor, one from each of two areas. A list of possible courses (non-AN) is listed in the APAN Graduate Student Handbook and in the MSU Registrar’s Graduate Course Catalog.

Additional Required Courses for the Archaeology, Bioarchaeology, and Forensic Anthropology Emphasis in the MA program:

  • AN 2510 – Archaeological Field Methods: Survey (3 credit hours)
  • AN 3510 – Archaeological Field Methods: Excavation (6 credit hours) or
  • AN/REL/MEC 3540 – Archaeological Travel and Participation (6 credit hours)
  • AN 6523 – Public Archaeology (3 credit hours)
  • AN 8533 – Readings in Archaeology: Theory (3 credit hours)
  • One Cultural Anthropology graduate course (AN) (3 credit hours)
  • 15 hours from the course list provided in the APAN Graduate Student Handbook and in the MSU Registrar’s Graduate Course Catalog.

Additional Required Courses for the Cultural Anthropology Emphasis in the MA program:

  • AN 4143 Ethnographic Methods (3 credit hours)
  • One Archaeology, Bioarchaeology or Forensic Anthropology graduate course (AN) (3 credit hours)

In addition, any student who does not have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology or who has not completed four-field introductory courses in anthropology will be required to take one or more of the following leveling courses:

  • AN 1143 – Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3 credit hours)
  • AN 1344 –Biological Anthropology: The Making of Us (3 credit hours)
  • AN 1543 – Discovering Archaeology: Past meets Present (3 credit hours)
